The Cpl. J.R. Spears detachment of the Marine Corps League is discontinuing our very
successful Help Our Heroes Call Home cell phone/calling card program as of April 1, 2012. Our Detachment, over the last four years,
has solicited and collected old, used cell phones from individuals and businesses. These cell phones were then mailed to a recycling
company in Colorado, using their post pre-paid mailing labels, which are available on this site (see Labels).
The company then paid us for the phones and we, in turn, purchased pre-paid calling cards, which were then delivered to our troops in Iraq
and Afghanistan in order for them to stay connected with their family and friends. The Program has donated over 60,000 calling cards
during this time, with a great deal of work and support from many Lady Lake, Florida businesses, individuals and their police department.
Since our troops are beginning to stand down, our active duty command has advised us, that since most of the troops now have cell phones,
that calling cards were no longer needed.
Since there will be donors, who will continue to use the old mailing labels from the HOHCH program, we have arranged with the recycler to
mail any money they receive from our account to the USO of Northwest Florida for as long as cell phones are donated by individuals using our
label. The USO Northwest Florida is not a government agency and can only operate through the generosity of companies, organizations, and
individuals within the community.
The USO Northwest Florida represents the best method to communicate to our Service Members the love, concern, and thanks of a grateful Nation
